Shukravar Lakshmi Puja

In many Hindu homes Friday (Shukravar) is set aside for Goddess Lakshmi. Even families who are not keeping the full Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat often light an extra lamp, clean the house with care and offer something sweet to the goddess on Friday evening. This page explains why Friday is linked with Lakshmi and describes simple practices you can follow at home.

Why Friday is Lakshmi's day

Each day of the week is named after a planet in Indian tradition. Friday belongs to Shukra, the planet Venus, which astrology connects with comfort, beauty, art, luxury and happiness in married life. These are also the blessings associated with Lakshmi, and in popular tradition Friday has long been the day of the goddess. It is the day on which the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat is kept, and Friday is also the day of the Santoshi Mata vrat, kept by many women in northern and western India.

Customs differ from region to region. In some places Thursday or the full moon is also important for Lakshmi worship, and Diwali is her greatest festival. Friday, though, is the weekly day that most homes keep for her.

Simple Friday practices at home

None of the practices below needs a priest or costly materials. Choose what suits your home and keep it up steadily.

Clean the house

According to tradition, Lakshmi stays where there is cleanliness and order. On Friday many families sweep and mop the house, clear clutter, wash the threshold and tidy the kitchen and the home shrine. A clean main entrance is given special care, since it is believed the goddess enters through it. Some draw a small rangoli or place a few flowers at the door.

Bathe and dress cleanly

Bathe before the puja and wear fresh clothes. Red, pink, white or yellow are commonly chosen for Lakshmi worship, but any clean clothes are fine.

Light a lamp

Light a ghee diya before the picture of Lakshmi in the morning, the evening, or both. Many people light a lamp at dusk near the main door or near the tulsi plant as well. The evening lamp at sunset is an old custom in Indian homes, and on Friday it is lit with the thought of welcoming the goddess.

Honour the tulsi

Tulsi (holy basil) is dear to Lord Vishnu, Lakshmi's consort, and in many traditions it is itself seen as a form of the goddess. Offer water to the tulsi in the morning, keep the area around it clean and light a lamp beside it in the evening. In the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat, the water from the kalash is poured on the tulsi after the puja. Many families do not pluck tulsi leaves on certain days, so follow your family's custom.

A short Friday puja

  1. Clean the shrine and place a picture of Lakshmi (or Vaibhav Lakshmi) on a red cloth.
  2. Light a ghee lamp and incense.
  3. Offer kumkum, haldi, akshat (unbroken rice) and a red flower, such as a rose or hibiscus. The lotus is especially dear to Lakshmi.
  4. Offer something sweet and white: kheer, sugar, mishri, batasha or any homemade sweet.
  5. Recite a mantra such as "ॐ श्रीं श्रियै नमः" or "ॐ महालक्ष्म्यै नमः" 11 or 108 times. See the mantra page for more.
  6. If you have time, read the Lakshmi Chalisa or the Shri Suktam.
  7. Sing the aarti "Om Jai Lakshmi Mata" and share the prasad with the family.

Speak gently and keep peace

The Vaibhav Lakshmi katha tells of a home that fell into misery through quarrels and bad habits and was restored through patience and devotion. In keeping with this, devotees try to avoid harsh words, arguments and gossip on Friday, and to treat the women and elders of the house with respect.

Food and giving

Those who are not fasting usually keep Friday food simple and sattvic, avoiding meat and alcohol. Some families also avoid sour food on Friday. Giving food, sweets or clothes to someone in need, or feeding a cow, is considered a good way to honour the goddess. People keeping the vrat follow the vrat rules.

Respect for money and grain

In many homes money, grain and food are treated with care as gifts of Lakshmi: not wasted, not stepped on and not thrown. Some families avoid lending money or sweeping out the house after sunset on Friday. These are household customs, and practice varies.

Friday puja and the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat

The practices above can be followed every Friday by anyone. The Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat goes one step further: the devotee takes a sankalp for a fixed number of Fridays, usually 11 or 21, fasts through the day, performs the puja with a kalash and a gold or silver ornament in the evening, reads the katha and completes the vow with an udyapan. If you would like to keep the vrat, start with the vrat vidhi and choose a Friday of Shukla Paksha.

A note on health

Fasting is a personal choice. Pregnant women, the sick, the elderly and people on medication should take a doctor's advice and may keep a lighter vow, for example with fruit and milk, or simply do the puja without fasting. This is not a substitute for medical advice; if you are unwell, please consult a doctor.
