Mahalakshmi Ashtakam
The Mahalakshmi Ashtakam (महालक्ष्म्यष्टकम्) is a short Sanskrit hymn of eight verses in praise of Goddess Mahalakshmi, followed by three verses of phala-shruti that describe the merit of reciting it. Tradition attributes it to Indra, the king of the gods, and it is commonly placed in the Padma Purana, which is why printed editions often call it the "Indrakrita" (composed by Indra) Mahalakshmi Ashtakam. According to the story told with the hymn, Indra sang these verses to the goddess to regain the fortune and splendour the gods had lost.
Every verse ends with the same refrain, "Mahalakshmi namo'stu te", "O Mahalakshmi, salutations to you". The simple metre and the repeated line make it one of the easiest Lakshmi stotras to learn by heart. Many devotees recite it on Fridays, during Diwali and Sharad Purnima, and as part of the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat puja, after the katha and before the aarti.
How to recite the Ashtakam
- Recite it after bathing, sitting before a picture or image of Maa Lakshmi with a lit ghee diya and incense.
- Offer a red flower or a pinch of kumkum and akshat as you complete each verse, if you wish.
- Read slowly with the transliteration until the pronunciation feels natural. Devotees believe that sincere devotion matters more than perfect Sanskrit.
- The phala-shruti mentions reciting it once, twice or three times a day; most people simply recite it once during their daily or Friday puja.

Phala-shruti (verses 9 to 11)
The closing verses say that a devotee who recites this hymn of eight verses with devotion is believed to attain every kind of success and lasting honour. Reciting it once a day is said to wash away great sins, reciting it twice a day to bring wealth and food grains, and reciting it three times a day to overcome even powerful enemies, while Mahalakshmi remains ever pleased, gracious and ready to grant boons. As with all phala-shruti, these are traditional statements of faith that encourage regular practice, not guarantees.
The Ashtakam in Vaibhav Lakshmi worship
The Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat has its own short vrat mantra, but many devotees add the Mahalakshmi Ashtakam on Fridays because it is brief and easy to sing. A common order is: puja and offerings, the Vaibhav Lakshmi katha, the vrat mantra, the Ashtakam, and finally the aarti "Om Jai Lakshmi Mata". Those who wish to go deeper often also learn the Shri Suktam or chant the 108 names of Lakshmi.
