"Om Jai Lakshmi Mata" is the best-known aarti of Goddess Lakshmi and the one sung at the close of the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat on every Friday. It comes after the Vaibhav Lakshmi katha has been read and the vrat mantra recited, and before the prasad is shared. The same aarti is sung at Lakshmi puja on Diwali night and at evening lamp-lighting in many homes across North and West India.

Meaning of the aarti, stanza by stanza
Refrain: Om Jai Lakshmi Mata
Victory to you, Mother Lakshmi. Day and night you are served by Hari, by Vishnu, the upholder of creation. The refrain places the goddess beside Vishnu himself, as his constant companion.
Uma Rama Brahmani
You are Uma (Parvati), Rama (Lakshmi) and Brahmani (Saraswati); you alone are the mother of the world. The sun and moon meditate on you and the sage Narada sings your praise.
Durga roop niranjani
You take the pure, spotless form of Durga and you are the giver of happiness and wealth. Devotees believe that whoever meditates on you receives riddhi, siddhi and dhan: growth, accomplishment and prosperity.
Tum patal-nivasini
You dwell even in the netherworld and you alone grant what is auspicious. You bring the fruits of our deeds to light, and you carry beings across the ocean of worldly life.
Jis ghar mein tum rahtin
In the home where you live, every good quality comes to stay. Everything becomes possible there and the mind no longer trembles with worry. Many devotees take this as a reminder that the goddess is honoured first through a clean, peaceful and kind household.
Tum bin yagya na hote
Without you no sacrifice could be performed and no one would have clothing. All the richness of food and drink comes from you.
Shubh-gun mandir sundar
You are a beautiful temple of good qualities, born from the ocean of milk. Without you no one could obtain the fourteen jewels that rose from its churning. This recalls the story of the churning of the ocean (samudra manthan), in which Lakshmi emerged and chose Vishnu as her consort.
Mahalakshmiji ki aarti
Whoever sings this aarti of Mahalakshmi finds joy filling the heart, and according to tradition their sins fall away. This closing stanza is the phala-shruti of the aarti, the verse that states the fruit of singing it.
How to perform the Lakshmi aarti
In the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat the aarti is the last act of worship, done after the katha and the mantra (see the full vrat vidhi for the earlier steps). The usual practice is simple:
- Prepare an aarti thali with a ghee diya (one wick or an odd number of wicks), or a piece of camphor, along with a few flowers, a pinch of kumkum and akshat (unbroken rice). Keep a small bell nearby.
- Stand facing the picture of Maa Lakshmi and the Shri Yantra on the chowki. Family members stand behind or beside the person doing the aarti.
- Light the diya or camphor and begin the refrain "Om Jai Lakshmi Mata" together.
- Wave the thali in slow clockwise circles before the goddess while everyone sings. A common practice is to circle four times at the feet, twice at the navel, once at the face and then seven times over the whole form, though families follow their own custom.
- Ring the bell with the other hand, or let another family member ring it, throughout the aarti.
- When the last stanza is sung, offer a flower at the goddess's feet and bow.
- Carry the thali to each person present. Each one passes both palms over the flame and touches them to the eyes and head, receiving the blessing of the light.
- Finish with a short prayer, asking forgiveness for any mistakes in the puja, then distribute the prasad.

When to sing the aarti
- Every Friday of the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat, usually in the evening after sunset, at the end of the puja.
- On the final Friday, during the udyapan, before gifting the katha books.
- On Diwali night after Lakshmi and Ganesh puja, on Sharad Purnima, and on Dhanteras.
- Many families sing it daily at the evening lamp-lighting.
Many devotees also recite the Lakshmi Chalisa before the aarti on Fridays. The aarti is meant to be sung aloud and together, so it does not matter if the voice is not trained; sincerity is what devotees value.
Frequently asked questions
Can the aarti be done without a ghee diya?
Yes. A ghee diya is preferred, but a lamp with oil or a piece of camphor is commonly used when ghee is not at hand.
Who should perform the aarti?
In the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat it is usually the person keeping the vow. Anyone in the family may do it when that person cannot, and all present may sing.
Is the wording the same in every book?
Not exactly. Small differences in spelling and the order of stanzas are common between booklets and regions. All are accepted in practice.

हे माँ लक्ष्मी, आपकी जय हो। सृष्टि के पालनहार भगवान विष्णु भी दिन-रात आपकी सेवा करते हैं। यह पंक्ति बताती है कि देवी सदा श्रीहरि के साथ रहती हैं।
उमा रमा ब्रह्माणी
आप ही उमा (पार्वती), रमा (लक्ष्मी) और ब्रह्माणी (सरस्वती) हैं, आप ही संसार की माता हैं। सूर्य और चंद्रमा आपका ध्यान करते हैं और नारद ऋषि आपके गुण गाते हैं।
दुर्गा रूप निरंजनी

तुम बिन यज्ञ न होते
आपके बिना कोई यज्ञ नहीं हो सकता और किसी को वस्त्र नहीं मिलते। भोजन और जल का सारा वैभव आपसे ही आता है।
शुभ-गुण मन्दिर सुन्दर
आप शुभ गुणों का सुंदर मंदिर हैं और क्षीरसागर से प्रकट हुई हैं। आपके बिना समुद्र मंथन से निकले चौदह रत्न कोई नहीं पा सकता। यह समुद्र मंथन की उस कथा की ओर संकेत है जिसमें लक्ष्मी जी प्रकट हुईं और भगवान विष्णु का वरण किया।
महालक्ष्मीजी की आरती
जो कोई महालक्ष्मी जी की यह आरती गाता है, उसके हृदय में आनंद भर जाता है और मान्यता के अनुसार उसके पाप दूर हो जाते हैं। यह आरती का फलश्रुति वाला अंतिम पद है।
लक्ष्मी जी की आरती करने की विधि
वैभव लक्ष्मी व्रत में आरती पूजा का अंतिम चरण है, जो कथा और मंत्र के बाद होती है (पहले के चरणों के लिए पूरी व्रत विधि देखें)। सामान्य विधि इस प्रकार है:
- आरती की थाली में घी का दीपक (एक बत्ती या विषम संख्या में बत्तियाँ) या कपूर रखें, साथ में कुछ फूल, थोड़ा कुमकुम और अक्षत रखें। पास में घंटी रखें।
- चौकी पर रखे माँ लक्ष्मी के चित्र और श्रीयंत्र के सामने खड़े हों। परिवार के लोग पीछे या बगल में खड़े हों।
- दीपक या कपूर जलाएँ और सब मिलकर "ॐ जय लक्ष्मी माता" से आरती आरंभ करें।
- सब गाते रहें और थाली को देवी के सामने धीरे-धीरे दक्षिणावर्त (घड़ी की दिशा में) घुमाएँ। प्रचलित रीति है कि चरणों के आगे चार बार, नाभि के आगे दो बार, मुख के आगे एक बार और फिर पूरे स्वरूप के आगे सात बार आरती घुमाई जाए, पर हर परिवार अपनी परंपरा मानता है।
- दूसरे हाथ से या किसी और सदस्य द्वारा पूरी आरती में घंटी बजाई जाए।
- अंतिम पद पूरा होने पर देवी के चरणों में एक फूल अर्पित करें और प्रणाम करें।
- थाली सबके पास ले जाएँ। हर व्यक्ति दोनों हथेलियों से ज्योति की लौ के ऊपर से आशीर्वाद लेकर आँखों और सिर से लगाए।
- अंत में पूजा में हुई भूल-चूक के लिए क्षमा माँगें और फिर प्रसाद बाँटें।

आरती कब गाएँ
- वैभव लक्ष्मी व्रत के हर शुक्रवार को, प्रायः सूर्यास्त के बाद संध्या पूजा के अंत में।
- अंतिम शुक्रवार को उद्यापन के समय, कथा की पुस्तकें भेंट करने से पहले।
- दीपावली की रात लक्ष्मी-गणेश पूजन के बाद, शरद पूर्णिमा और धनतेरस पर।
- बहुत से परिवार रोज़ संध्या दीपक के समय भी यह आरती गाते हैं।
शुक्रवार को बहुत से भक्त आरती से पहले लक्ष्मी चालीसा का पाठ भी करते हैं। आरती ऊँचे स्वर में सबके साथ गाई जाती है, इसलिए सुर सधा हुआ न हो तो भी कोई बात नहीं; भक्त श्रद्धा को ही सबसे बड़ा मानते हैं।
अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न
क्या घी के दीपक के बिना आरती हो सकती है?
हाँ। घी का दीपक उत्तम माना जाता है, पर घी न हो तो तेल का दीपक या कपूर भी प्रायः उपयोग में लिया जाता है।
आरती कौन करे?
वैभव लक्ष्मी व्रत में प्रायः व्रत रखने वाला व्यक्ति ही आरती करता है। वह न कर सके तो परिवार का कोई भी सदस्य कर सकता है, और उपस्थित सभी लोग साथ गा सकते हैं।
क्या हर पुस्तक में आरती के शब्द एक जैसे होते हैं?
