Shri Yantra Puja
The Shri Yantra (also written Sri Yantra or Shri Chakra) is a sacred geometric diagram associated with the Divine Mother. In the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat it has a small but special place: in the popular booklet tradition, the devotee bows to the Shri Yantra before beginning the Friday puja. This page explains what the Shri Yantra is, how it fits into the vrat, and how to place, honour and look after it at home.
What the Shri Yantra is
A yantra is a diagram used as a focus for worship and meditation. The Shri Yantra is the best known of all. At its heart is a single point, the bindu. Around it are nine interlocking triangles: four pointing upwards and five pointing downwards. In traditional explanations the upward triangles are linked with Shiva (the masculine principle) and the downward triangles with Shakti (the feminine principle), and their meeting shows the union from which creation unfolds. Together the nine triangles form a network of smaller triangles.
The triangles are surrounded by two rings of lotus petals (eight petals and sixteen petals), then by circles, and finally by a square outer frame with a gate on each of the four sides, called the bhupura. Seen as a whole, the design moves from the outer world, through the gates and petals, inwards to the still central point.
The Shri Yantra is central to the Shri Vidya tradition, where it is the form of the goddess Lalita Tripurasundari. It is also widely honoured as a yantra of Mahalakshmi, and this is the link that brings it into Lakshmi worship and the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat. It is made in two main styles: flat (drawn, printed or engraved on a metal plate) and three-dimensional, where the layers rise like a small mountain, called the Meru Shri Yantra.
Its role in the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat
The vrat booklet usually includes a picture of the Shri Yantra along with pictures of the eight forms of Lakshmi. According to the booklet tradition, before the puja the devotee looks at the Shri Yantra with devotion and bows to it, and then bows to each of the eight forms of Lakshmi. Many Vaibhav Lakshmi pictures also show the yantra beside the goddess. Keeping the yantra on the puja chowki is common, but it is not required: the picture in the booklet is enough for the vrat. See the vrat vidhi for the full order of the puja.
For devotees, the yantra is a way of holding the mind steady on the goddess. Its symmetry and its movement towards the centre are seen as a picture of the devotee's own journey: from scattered thoughts to a calm, focused heart.
How to place the Shri Yantra
Customs vary between families and teachers. The points below reflect common household practice:
- Keep it in a clean, quiet place, usually in the home shrine or on the chowki used for the Friday puja.
- Place it on a clean red or yellow cloth, or on a small plate, and not directly on the floor.
- Many people set it so that it faces east or so that the worshipper faces east or north while praying. Follow the direction already used for your home shrine.
- A flat yantra is placed with the bindu at the centre and the square frame level, not tilted. A Meru yantra stands upright on its base.
- During the vrat it is placed beside or in front of the picture of Vaibhav Lakshmi, near the kalash and other samagri.
How to honour it on Friday
- After bathing, clean the puja place and light a ghee lamp and incense.
- Sit facing the yantra and the picture of the goddess. Take a few calm breaths.
- Offer a little kumkum or sandal paste at the centre or on the frame, and a red flower or a few grains of akshat (unbroken rice).
- Look at the yantra for a moment, letting your gaze move inwards towards the bindu, and bow with folded hands.
- Recite a simple mantra such as "ॐ श्रीं श्रियै नमः" (Om Shreem Shriyai Namah) a few times, or as many times as you wish. More mantras are on the mantra page.
- Bow to the eight forms of Lakshmi and continue with the Vaibhav Lakshmi puja, katha and aarti.
Some devotees also recite the Shri Suktam before the yantra. Elaborate Shri Yantra worship with many steps belongs to the Shri Vidya tradition and is learnt from a teacher; it is not needed for the Vaibhav Lakshmi Vrat.
Care of the yantra
- Wipe it gently with a soft, clean cloth. A metal yantra can be rinsed with clean water and dried well; some families use a little raw milk and then water.
- Avoid harsh chemical cleaners, which can damage the engraving.
- Do not keep it in the bathroom, the bedroom floor or among shoes.
- If a paper yantra becomes torn or faded, you may replace it. The old one is usually immersed in flowing water or placed under a tree with respect, according to family custom.
- Handle it with clean hands, as you would any sacred object.
A note on beliefs
The Shri Yantra is an object of devotion and meditation. Devotees believe that worshipping it with faith brings peace and the goddess's grace, but it is not a charm that guarantees money or any other result. Be careful of sellers who promise wealth, cures or instant success from a yantra. What the vrat asks for is sincerity, a clean home and good conduct.
